AfricaAHEAD is excited to announce the implementation of a new Community Health Club Project in Cape Town’s informal settlements. With the assistance from several partner organisations, AfricaAHEAD plans to implement a health clubs in 5 different townships in Cape Town.
AfricaAHEAD plans to implement the project in the False Bay area (Vrygrond, Masiphumelele, and Red Hills), which is a new frontier for the organisation, as health clubs have never existed in these areas. Clubs will also be established in new sections of Philippi and Mitchell’s Plain.
Imbasa Community Resources will be provide the facilitators to the health clubs, as AfricaAHEAD has previously trained these facilitators in the AHEAD methodology. For approximately 6 months (24 weeks), a member of Imbasa will visit each of the health clubs to facilitate a 2 hour session on one of AfricaAHEAD’s 24 modules on health, hygiene and sanitation.
In Vrygrond, AfricaAHEAD will also be working with Vrygrond Community Development Trust for a truly special project. The health club will consist of HIV-positive women from Vrygrond who currently work with the organisation’s income generating project. Trainings will take place Vrygrond Community Centre, the impressive new facility (result of a partnership with Etafeni Trust) where the women are currently working. It is both AfricaAHEAD and VCDT’s hope that these women will later become facilitators for the AHEAD methodology in their own communities.
The clubs in Philippi and Mitchell’s Plain have special significance for Imbasa Community Resources, as their membership is from the communities in which two members of Imbasa live.
