CAWST Adopts the CHC model for achieving their vision of ‘Healthy Homes within Healthy Communities’

CAWST (Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technologies) that is based in Calgary, Canada has adopted the CHC model for achieving sustainable hygiene behaviour change.  This followed an inspection visit by CAWST’s CEO, Shauna Curry and Chairman and chief funder, David O’Brian, who spent several days visiting AA’s projects and CHCs in action in Zimbabwe in August 2017.  This Look & Learn visit by CAWST resulted in AA responding positively to CAWST decision to adopt the CHC model for their programmes in Zambia and beyond.

Regis Matimati, Africa AHEAD country Director in Zimbabwe, has since the start of 2018, made two visits to Ndola to train and mentor the staff of ‘Water, Expertise & Training Centre’ or WET-Centre that CAWST has been funding for the past 15 years.

Africa AHEAD in Zimbabwe also provided CAWST with the all-important CHC Training materials and Tool kits to enable a quick take off of their CHC project.  Because of AA’s inputs, CHCs are now being implemented within the high-density ‘compounds’ around Ndola.

CAWST has already established several similar WET-Centres around the world and it is anticipated that the CHC model may well be disseminated by CAWST to other countries where they operate.
