Olifants-Doorn Water Management Area

September 9, 2008 – 1:45 pm

Located predominantly in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, Africa AHEAD is working to start Community Health Clubs (CHC) in the West Coast and Cape Winelands District Municipalities. In this Water Management Area(WMA), Africa AHEAD will be working closely with Ministry of Health staff to implement the CHC Approach.

CAPE WINELANDS DISTRICT: In this district, CHCs will be piloted in the Witzenberg Local Municipality, in and around the town of Op die Berg. This area was selected because it hosts the main clinic within the norther part of the municipality and the conditions on many of the farms surrounding Op die Berg are the worst in the area. To date, the entire community of Op die Berg has been mapped and the the baseline data is being collected to allow for a comprehensive evaluation of the impact of CHCs in the area.

WEST COAST DISTRICT: At the moment, appropriate sites have yet to be determined. A situational analysis is currently underway and site visits have been conducted, but additional consultations with the Ministry of Health and other relevant stakeholders are necessary before any final decisions are to be made. However, it is likely that CHCs will be piloted in informal settlements located in and around the major towns of the District (Clanwilliams, Ceres and Vrendendal) as well as on commercial farms.
